The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on September 15, 2024, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, celebrated the finest achievements in American television. FX’s Shōgun dominated the drama categories with a historic 18 total wins, while Max’s Hacks captured Outstanding Comedy Series and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer swept the limited series honors.
Understanding the 2024 Dual Emmy Award Ceremonies
Calendar year 2024 was unprecedented in Television Academy history because it featured two separate Primetime Emmy Award ceremonies. Due to industry-wide Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) strikes in 2023, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards—originally scheduled for September 2023—were postponed to January 15, 2024. That ceremony honored television broadcasts from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, where HBO's Succession, FX's The Bear (Season 1), and Netflix's Beef dominated top honors.
The main focus for television fans searching for 2024 Emmy winners, however, centers on the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards held eight months later on September 15, 2024. Hosted by father-and-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, this broadcast honored programs aired between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. Understanding this distinction is vital when navigating award records, as shows like The Bear competed and won major awards across both events in the same calendar year for different eligibility periods.
Drama Categories: Historic Dominance by Shōgun
The drama categories at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards belonged overwhelmingly to FX’s historical epic Shōgun. Set in 17th-century Japan and adapted from James Clavell’s acclaimed novel, Shōgun set a single-season Emmy record by winning 18 awards across the Creative Arts and Primetime ceremonies, out of 25 total nominations.
